Product Description

This monumental documentary features stunning and never before seen archival footage of Pan American Airways epoch ten year, ten thousand mile conquest of the Pacific Ocean. This story begins in 1929 with the first plane christened as a Pan American Clipper by Mrs. Herbert Hoover, assisted by Pan Am's legendary founder Juan Trippe. See aviation pioneers such as Igor Sikorsky and Pan American's technical advisor, Charles Lindbergh, play integral roles in designing the Sikorsky S-42 which was the first plane capable of Trans Pacific flights. Follow the first plane to be called the "China Clipper"- the Martin M-130, from construction to its historic first flight across the Pacific in 1935, piloted by the famous Captain Musik.

You'll marvel at the heroic Pan American construction crews who built pre-fabricated base operations and passenger layover hotels on remote Wake Island, Midway Island and on Guam. Magnificent footage from an old promotional film shows, in detail, a Boeing 314 Clipper flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong via the elegant pacific stopovers in Honolulu, Midway Island, Wake Island, Guam & Manila, Philippines. In addition to wonderful local footage, passengers are seen relaxing and dining on board a Boeing Clipper, with much attention paid to in flight Clipper service and amenities on board a clipper, including overnight sleeping berths. Fascinating images include crew operations both in the air and on the ground!

What many may not realize, and which is shown in detail, is that Pan American Clipper flight crews from Pilots and Flight Engineers to Mechanics and Navigators provided much of the essential training that taught our air defense the vital skills required in the Pacific during World War II. As part of this grand vintage air adventure, you'll see spectacular aviation footage of the famous flying boats like the Sikorsky S-40 and S-42, the Martin M-130, the Boeing Model B-314, and Sikorsky's final seaplane, the VS-44A, which last served commercially between Long Beach and Catalina Island!
